Isaacs, Isaac

(1855-1948)
   Australian governor-general. Born in Melbourne, he worked as a teacher in local schools, and later studied law at Melbourne University. He initially worked as a lawyer, later serving as a member of the Victorian leglislative assembly. He was solicitor-general and attorney-general. Subsequently he was a justice of the federal high court, becoming chief justice. In 1931 he was appointed governor-general of Australia.
